RUNWAY 34- Movie Review

Runway 34 is a great aviation thriller movie which is inspired by the true story of the Jet Airways Doha Kochi flight. Due to the bad weather and low visibility, plane faced difficulties to land. The pilot had to make a "blind" landing on the runway. This almost risked the lives of 150 people present onboard.

Runway 34 is the story of a pilot, Captain Vikrant Khanna (Ajay Devgn), Who has been working for the Skyline Airlines. At the beginning of the story Captain Vikrant Khanna is staying in the hotel in Dubai because the next day, he is supposed to fly to Cochin. Vikrant’s friend Sandy calls him for a party. Vikrant refused at first but then, Vikrant goes to meet him in the club.

Vikrant met a girl named Anjali in that club, and all three enjoyed a lot in the party then, Vikrant came back from the club and he rest in his room and then he goes to the airport because he had a flight from Dubai to Cochin.

Captain Vikrant’s eyes turns red due to heavy drinking and lack of sleep, So he wore goggles. Captain Vikrant met Co-pilot Tanya Albuquerque (Rakul Preet Singh) at the airport, then both of them goes to the plane.

Ajay Nagar aka Carry Minati also has a small role in the film, he plays a role of irritating passenger who is recording that what happened in the flight but that recording never used as evidence later in the film.

The flight takes off and when it’s time to land, Vikrant and Tanya face difficulties. Now Captain Vikrant and Co-pilot Tanya contact the control room of the airport and then, they come to know that, they will not be able to lands the plane in Cochin due to bad weather and also they will not able to see anything on the runway due to which their plane may crash.

Conversations go on between Co-pilot Tanya and Captain Vikrant, Co-pilot Tanya told him to go to Bangalore but captain Vikrant decides to land the plane in Trivandrum because Trivandrum is near than Bangalore and there is not much fuel left in the plane.

After an argument, Co-pilot Tanya agrees with the Captain Vikrant’s point and then he proceeds to Trivandrum. By then, the weather of Trivandrum also deteriorates. Due to network issue, the control room of airport does not inform Vikrant and Tanya to not to head towards Trivandrum.

As soon as both the pilot turns the plane towards Trivandrum, then the control room told them, the weather of Trivandrum is also very bad but by then, it is too late because captain Vikrant already reached Trivandrum.

There is no other option except to land the plane in Trivandrum because of less fuel and they cannot keep the plane in the air for long.

The control room staff advises them to land on runway 16. However Vikrant insists on landing at runway 34 which is a risky move according to the control room team. But, Vikrant sticks to his plan and with great difficulty, plane lands on runway 34 successfully.

SO, IT'S ALL ABOUT THE FIRST HALF!!!

In the second half of the movie, the story revolves around the courtroom where AAIB

(Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau)

wants to investigate, if the rules were broken or not in the landing of the flight.

But But...
If you’re not a movie person, then dear I am here to tell you the rest of the story.

SPOILER- RED ALERT

In the courtroom Advocate Narayan Vedant (Amitabh Bachchan) apply allegations on Captain Vikrant Khanna that he broken a lot of rules of the flight.

First allegation was that, why did Captain Vikrant Khanna land at Trivandrum.
Second allegation was that why did Captain Vikrant choose runway 34 instead of runway 16 because runway 16 was a better option.

Another allegation against Captain Vikrant is that he was flying the plane under the influence of alcohol.

Advocate Narayana Vedanta tries his best to blame Captain Vikrant due to which he calls a girl named Anjali who was at club party with Vikrant and his friend at Dubai and Anjali claims that Vikrant drinks a lot that night.

On that, Captain Vikrant replied that drinking alcohol 12 hours before the plane takes off is not a crime and it had been 15 hours since I drank alcohol so, I have not broken any rules.

In the midst of all this, Advocate Narayan Vedant brought a bottle of alcohol which he got from the plane and claimed that Captain Vikrant had it before flying the plane and Captain Vikrant refused about it.

Then advocate Narayan Vedant investigates, Co-pilot Tanya and in the end Advocate, Narayan gets the truth out of the mouth of Co-pilot Tanya that when the plane landing was being done on runway 34 Trivandrum, Captain Vikrant’s eyes were closed and this is considered to be the great carelessness.

Then that day, courtroom drama ends and the court says, that we are going to give our verdict tomorrow.

Then, the next day when the result is about to come, the judge said, Captain Vikrant Khanna to give his last statement then, Captain Vikrant says yes I would like to give my last statement.

Whenever there is a plane crash, the pilot is always considered to be the culprit, he further says that if the weather is bad or if there is a mistake of any control room officer, so why always the pilot is targeted??

After this, the judge mostly escapes his charges but the most serious allegation on him is that why he was closed the eyes before landing the plane, Captain Vikrant said I was worked as private jet pilot and I always land that private jet on runway 34 that’s why i have much experience to land the plane on runway 34 without even seeing by my eyes but seeing by my mind.

Then Caption Vikrant appeals to judge to explain, that situation practically.
Captain Vikrant takes Advocate Narayan Vedant with him, in a Visual 3-D plane and all the situations are created in the exact way like in Kochi or Trivandrum.

Sitting in the visual plane, Captain Vikrant blindfolds his eyes and tries his best to explain everything to Advocate Narayan Vedant and then, he lands the visual plan safely through the calculations and maths of his mind.

Seeing this, Advocate Narayan Vedant understands that Captain Vikrant is a very skilful and experienced pilot and our country needs him a lot.

In the next scene scene,

The judge tells his last decision that captain Vikrant Khanna is very skilful and experienced pilot, he has saved the lives of many people through his understanding but captain Vikrant should not land the plane with his closed eyes. No matter how strong his maths and calculations are.

Caption Vikrant was free from the criminal charges by a verdict of not guilty but due to his mistake, his pilot license got suspended for 3 months.

After three months, when Vikrant Khanna got his pilot license back then,

An Air Hostess came to him and told him that she had that alcohol on that flight and kept her mouth shut because she is a single mother and afraid of loosing her job, then Vikrant Khanna gave her a positive smile and move towards the airport and at this point the Runway 34 movie ends.

AS A POTENTIAL VIEWER

My rating for the movie is 3.5/5. The performance of Ajay Devgn and Amitabh Bachchan is killing. Acting of Rakul Preet Singh is absolutely perfect and real. Direction of the movie binds you till the end. Story of the movie is literally appreciable and our bollywood really needs these kinds of stories that are totally different.

So, overall Runway 34 is an interesting film which is a perfect combination of drama and thriller.

If you are in the mood of action, thriller film then, definitely go for it. It worths your time and money.
